BOOK OF THE WEEK with Linda Jennings. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Bk 10 - Old School, , Jeff Kinney, ISBN 9780141365091 (Penguin) BD5.900 for Gulf Weekly Book Club members

Only released on sale yesterday: Book 10 in the bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series!

In the latest instalment of the phenomenal Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, author-illustrator Jeff Kinney brings the series back to its roots, as Greg starts a new school year and faces a challenge he never could’ve imagined.

Life was better in the old days. Or was it? That’s the question Greg Heffley is asking as his town voluntarily unplugs and goes electronics-free. But modern life has its conveniences, and Greg isn’t cut out for an old-fashioned world.

With tension building inside and outside the Heffley home, will Greg find a way to survive? Or is going ‘old school’ just too hard for a kid like Greg?

You Are Here: Around The World In 92 Minutes, Chris Hadfield, ISBN 9781447278627 (PanMacmillan) BD8.400 for Gulf Weekly Book Club members

In You Are Here, celebrated astronaut Chris Hadfield gives us the really big picture: this is our home, as seen from space.

The millions of us who followed Hadfield’s news-making Twitter feed from the International Space Station thought we knew what we were looking at when we first saw his photos. But we may have caught the beauty and missed the full meaning.

Now, through photographs – many of which have never been shared – Hadfield unveils a fresh and insightful look at our planet. He sees astonishing detail and importance in these images, not just because he’s spent months in space but because his in-depth knowledge of geology, geography and meteorology allows him to reveal the photos’ mysteries.

Featuring Hadfield’s favourite images, You Are Here is divided by continent and represents one (idealised) orbit of the ISS. Surprising, thought-provoking and visually delightful, it opens a singular window on our planet, using remarkable photographs to illuminate the history and consequences of human settlement, the magnificence of never-before-noticed landscapes, and the power of the natural forces shaping our world and the future of our species.

My favourite read of the week
Star Wars R2-D2’s Droid Workshop, Katrina Pallant, ISBN 9781405275798 (Egmont) BD8.400 for Gulf Weekly Book Club members

With the new Star Wars film due to be released before the end of the year, we might as well start gearing up now for a Star Wars Christmas!

One of my favourite activity books at the moment is this super publication by Egmont which contains both a press out, build it yourself model of R2-D2 and a full colour story and activity book.

R2-D2 has a mission to get Princess Leia’s distress message to Alderaan. Join him as he escapes a starship, hurtles through space, navigates a desert, gets kidnapped by Jawas … and much more.

The book is full of fun activities including mazes, word games, puzzles and lots of creative fun. The press-out pieces which slot together to make a R2-D2 model perfect for recreating scenes, playing games and displaying to all your friends.

Geared at the 7-10 age market, it’s bound to be a winner!
