Who will follow in the footsteps of last year’s winners, Shaikh Rashid Al Khalifa and youngster Yaseen Le Falher, to clinch the coveted title at the 13th annual National Day Golf Tournament, taking place at the Royal Golf Club on December 16 and 17?
The 36-hole, two-day tournament, originally the idea of Shaikh Ebrahim bin Khalid Al Khalifa, will be sponsored this year by Audi Bahrain and is expected to attract record numbers of competitors.
As reported earlier in GolfWeekly, the tournament was created to promote friendship and unity between Bahrainis and expatriate residents of the island and was first played at the former Riffa Golf Club, now Royal Golf Club, back in 2003.
Steven Hill, general manager, motors division, Behbehani Bros., said: “The National Day Golf Tournament is an event of enormous significance for Bahrain. We are delighted to be the title sponsor as the event offers us a great opportunity to connect with golfers, club members and our customers through one of the most popular sports.”
This year’s tournament will feature 50 expat golfers paired up with 50 Bahraini players. The first day of competition will be played in the two-player scramble format while day-two will be played in the two-player better ball format.
The event will include an international breakfast for all the competitors on day one and a traditional Bahraini breakfast on day two, followed by a morning shotgun start on both days.
Day two will conclude with a prize-giving ceremony and an ‘East meets West’ lunch where the winning pair with the best two-day aggregate score will be announced.
The tournament has traditionally been well supported by both Bahrainis and expats who all enter into the spirit of the occasion by donning red and white golfing attire for Bahrain’s National Day.
“We’re very excited to have Behbehani Brothers and Audi Bahrain on board for this very popular tournament,” added Stephen Havrilla, the Royal Golf Club’s general manager. “We generally have well over 100 competitors of all ages and nationalities taking part and we’re looking forward to an equally successful event this year marking Bahrain’s National Day.”
