I read with great interest
your front page article on the proposal to clad Seef Mall with LEDs in keeping with other iconic buildings in Bahrain
(April 6-12 issue). This, it was argued, was an environmentally-friendly way of making the building more attractive to
customers and visitors to Bahrain, thereby one assumes increasing footfall at the location.
I would like to suggest an alternative solution not involving lighting up the night sky and the obvious environmental
impacts this will cause.
Why not make Seef Mall Bahrain’s first truly sustainable mall? Make it THE location of choice for anyone wanting to
shop in an environmentally-sustainable manner where their environmental conscientiousness is rewarded.
So, for example, ban non-biodegradable shopping bags and encourage people to bring their own reusable bags.
Install a recycling centre for all recyclable waste streams. Introduce a waste minimisation programme for all
businesses.
Set up a biobin system for all organic waste from restaurants.
Use a water recycling system for the grounds and cleaning.
Use minimally environmentally-damaging cleaning products.
Install low water use systems in all the washrooms.
Encourage customers to car share.
Run regular environmental education programmes for customers who win shopping points for their environmentally-
friendly ideas.
Have a no-paper day every month, then weekly.
Encourage businesses to sign up to the mall’s environmental policy.
Install energy-saving lighting systems.
Install reverse vending machines for empty cans and bottles.
Have a partnership with Bahrain Bus Company to give shopping points to people who arrive by bus. And, and … and ...
make Seef Mall - THE place for sustainable shopping in Bahrain!
