THE one thing I wish I could leave behind whenever we move is a migraine but it keeps turning up wherever I lay my hat.

All fellow migraine sufferers have my sympathy and utmost respect. I’m on Day 3 of battling with this particular attack, which took me by surprise, but then again they always do.

There really is no telling when the migraine monster will strike, over the years I have learned to take preventative measures and to be prepared. It’s the only way.

The husband calls me ‘Jackie O’ because I’m the expat looking diva wearing the largest dark sunglasses in sight. I don’t care where I am, inside Alosra, Seef Mall, Starbucks, you may have spotted me.

You see, one of my migraine triggers is the glare from sunlight and nasty artificial indoor lighting and there’s a lot of that around here in Bahrain.

I walked in to my dentist’s clinic the other day only to be confronted with a flickering strip light. I had to make my apologies, quickly leave and rearrange my appointment.

It’s a pain but a risk I’m not willing to take because all migraneurs know it’s more than a headache, in fact, we get quite upset when someone compares migraine to a headache.

I have a few other must do’s to keep my migraines at bay - stay hydrated, eat regular meals, keep to a routine sleep pattern and try to maintain low stress levels (easier said than done with the husband, kids and dog!)

This expat journey has, however, presented me with some awesome alternative migraine therapies, which I may not have had the chance to experience otherwise

I’ve had success with yoga, acupuncture, homeopathy, cranial osteopathy, Reiki and Qigong to name a few.

I’m always on the look to try something new; all suggestions will be gladly welcome.

Please email editor@gulfweekly.com with your thoughts. Thanks, Morag x
