I’m ashamed to admit that it has taken me this long to drag myself out of bed early enough on a Saturday morning to make my way to the local Bahraini Farmer’s Market in Budaiya.
With the sleepy, grumpy husband in tow, our teenagers still in the land of nod, the dog raising one eyebrow as we walked out the door and myself excitedly swinging my long life shopping bags – we were off.
Heading in the direction of Budaiya Botanical Gardens, we soon spotted the well sign-posted Farmer’s Market and much to the delight of my husband and to my relief (otherwise I would never had heard the end of it) we found a parking space! Phew, that was easy, although I must stress that we arrived at 7.30am to avoid the rush.
The weather was beautifully cool with a mere wisp of a breeze. Surrounded by greenery and delicious smells wafting from the food stalls towards us, it soon became clear to me why this market is so popular.
The locally-grown produce is a sight to behold - fresh, colourful and extremely easy on your wallet.
We quickly found ourselves seeking out a trolley to help us carry our vegetable bounty. The atmosphere was friendly and we bumped into several friends whilst moving from stall-to-stall - such a fun start to the day.
Ending our trip to the market with a tasty local Bahraini breakfast, the husband announced: ‘we’ll have to return next week!’ Indeed, we will, my dear, indeed we will.’
