One of Bahrain’s most celebrated artists, Jamal Abdul Rahim, is showcasing his sculpting skills and Plexiglas and digital prints in a memorable exhibit at The Bahrain Arts Society in Budaiya, writes Mai Al Khatib-Camille.

The self-taught father of-three is featuring 55 art pieces of which 34 are prints and 21 are sculptures in an exhibition entitled Engrained in Memory. The 61-year-old’s love for art started in 1984 after he returned from India after studying technical drawing and three years his work was exhibited at Al Hala Club close to his Muharraq home.

Jamal said: “I love the challenges in art and trying out new techniques. Everything around me is an inspiration, starting with Muharraq with its alleys, familiar faces and the sea. The beautiful fonts of Arabic calligraphy, which I sometimes use in my artwork, also inspire me.”

He has probably the largest print-making workshop in the Gulf and has made a number of hand-made books which have been part of many roving exhibitions all over the region.

Jamal paints using paper and pencil, canvas, oil colours, acrylic and mixed media paintings. For his handmade art prints, he uses acid free paper, special types of ink and a press machine.

For his sculptures, he uses different types of stones, including marble and granite, as well as bronze.  He has won countless awards, exhibited globally, and his artwork now fetches
anything from BD200 to BD2,500. The sculptures vary in price.

The current exhibition will run until Sunday. For more details, contact 175990562 or 17590551
