An annual golf tournament held at the Royal Golf Club in remembrance of all the people who died in the Al Dana Dhow tragedy on March 30, 2006, has raised BD200.
The money will be used by the Christian Community Cemetery Committee to support the upkeep of a memorial headstone in the Old Christian Cemetery in Manama.
The event was organised by The Royalists golf society and the money was raised by donations from the competition’s participants.
The 2017 Al Dana Memorial Trophy was won by Phil Sadler with a nett score of 72. Sam Hobday was runner up with 74 nett and also won the gross category of the competition with a gross score of 72. Rob Lane came third on 75 nett.
Nearest the pin side contests on all the par 3 holes on the Club’s Montgomerie championship course were won by Gordon Bennie (hole 2), Stewart Tankard (hole 7), Jason Smith (hole 12) and Andy Love (hole 16).
The Al Dana dhow disaster claimed the lives of 58 people when the ill-fated vessel capsized during a Nass, Murray & Roberts party to celebrate the completion of concreting work at the Bahrain World Trade Centre. The company had hired the dhow from Island Tours, which had leased it from the Abdulla Al Kobaisi Company for Travel and Tourism.
The memorial stone, erected two days before the first anniversary of the tragedy, has become an assembly point for all those who lost loved ones and those who had deep compassion for the victims.
