ON the sixth anniversary of the death of golfing legend Seve Ballesteros, picturedbelow, a memorial tournament took place at the Royal Golf Club to mark the occasion.

The individual stableford competition was narrowly won on count back by Ronan Smith with a score of 39 points. Sebastian Woodrow was runner-up with the same score while Ronan Armstrong came third with 37 points.

Ballesteros, pictured, was one of Europe’s most famous golfers and retired from competitive golf in 2007 and in 2008 was diagnosed with a malignant tumour. He died of brain cancer on May 7, 2011, aged  54.

“We run this competition every year in tribute to one of the world’s most famous golfers,” said Adam Dutson, the Royal Golf Club’s tournament coordinator.

“Some of the shots Seve played in his career were truly magnificent and his signature pose after holing the putt at the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1984 is an image that every golfer has etched on their mind.

Congratulations to Ronan on a great score.
