Friends … ‘so no-one told you life was gonna be this way, your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D.O.A … I’ll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour ...’

As I heard my ringtone this morning, almost three years after I started watching the TV show Friends, I was prodded into a lot of thinking. Perhaps because I’ve just finished with my Year 12 exams and this past year, I’ve lived a slice of ‘the real life’. There were some happy moments, some stress, some disappointments, a lot of hard work and an invisible amount of fun. But what I had all through was friendship - my closest friends who stuck by me ‘when the rain starts to pour’.

We may touch 45 degrees soon this summer and balmy days may follow, but for us, students, it’s probably the best time of the year. We can unwind and loosen the reins for a bit and reflect upon our achievements in the past year.

It would be refreshing for all of us to invest a little more in relationships, ice-laden cold drinks and scrumdiddlyumptious ice creams.

Here’s to the friends who turned into family … happy holidays! (I’d take your leave for now, I’ve got to Google the meaning of D.O.A.)
