Plane sailing

If you suffer from the club coming over the top when you begin your downswing, the majority of the time your take away and back swing will be flat and coming from the inside.

This swing will often cause a slice or a pull hook.

In order to help get your back swing on plane, place your golf bag (or something of similar size) by your side. The aim is not to hit your golf bag as you take the club away.

Use this for a few practice swings then take the bag away and try a shot, it may take a few attempts in order to get the correct feeling and club on plane.

For the uninitiated, the golf swing plane is an imaginary flat service that is used to determine what path certain parts of the body and club are travelling on throughout the golf swing. It is a combination of the movement (arc) of the shoulders, arms, hands and club predominantly.
