The seven-seater segment is awash with options in the current market, and SsangYong is aiming to hit the heights with its impressive new 2018 Rexton … quite literally as it was unveiled at an intimate media breakfast event at the Capital Club.

The South Korean marque has made great strides in recent years, and the Rexton continues this trend with a raft of safety and infotainment features that belies its generous budget-friendly price tag.

The new model is powered by G20DTR DI, a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine, delivering maximum power of 225BHP and torque of 350Nm, with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission.

Motorcity gave assembled media an indepth presentation before serving tea and croissants at the high-rise Seef executive membership club in Bahrain Financial Harbour. However, the extended views of Bahrain were not the most beautiful thing in sight. This was left to the Rexton, as guests were taken downstairs and given a look at the sleek, curvy model, resplendent in the bright morning sun.

Motorcity senior general manager, Dr Bijan Majidi, said: “Rexton is the latest addition to the new model line-up from SsangYong. We have seen a high demand for quality vehicles at affordable prices in Bahrain and the Rexton is the perfect fit in the seven- seater segment.

“SsangYong is committed to introducing a new car every year for the next three years, and is also focused on creating further growth by developing petrol-powered, EV and other eco-friendly vehicles.”

The Rexton comes in three main trim levels: Low, Mid and High, and offers a spacious cabin for passengers in order to fulfil the company’s design mandate of making journeys as comfortable as possible.

No expense has been spared in the interior of the High option, with a contemporary ambience highlighted by the high-grade Nappa leather trim, with a touch of quilted Nappa leather for the seat inserts and other interior trims.

The car’s safety features include brake assist, electronic brake force distribution and ABS, traction control, active rollover protection, front airbags and an emergency stop signal. SsangYong has also added new driver assistance safety features such as lane departure warning and high beam assistance.

The top-of-the-range Rexton adds front and rear cameras, blind spot detection as well as rear cross-traffic alert to provide a clear view of the area surrounding the car to increase safety and driver convenience during low-speed driving and parking.

Furthermore, the advanced infotainment system includes connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto for device mirroring, a rear view reversing camera, all displayed on an eight-inch screen.

Other features include a Supervision instrument cluster with a particularly large seven-inch LCD display for driver information, and a ‘smart’ electronic tailgate for added convenience when loading and unloading the boot.

Dr Bijan exclusively told GulfWeekly during the launch: “It’s a fantastic car with many features that you’d struggle to find on competitors models, and at a much lower price point. SsangYong is making great strides to change the perception of budget cars, and the Rexton will only quicken that process.”

The SsangYong Rexton as highlighted comes in three different versions: Low (BD8,995), Medium (BD10,500) and High (BD11,400) or at BD131 per month, at zero down payment, a five-year or 150,000km warranty, and five-years of roadside assistance.
