HUNDREDS of children have taken part in Heya Beya heritage festivals staged around Bahrain’s coastal areas to mark the start of the Eid Al Adha celebrations.
Heya Beya is grass planted in baskets made of palm tree leaves. Every year, parents encourage their children to plant them before Eid, while others buy ready-made ones from local markets.
It is believed that the celebration dates back to the ancient Dilmon-era as the tradition is only marked in Bahrain.
Bahraini children wear traditional clothes and head to the seaside at sunset with family and friends singing and chanting folk songs and at all at once they cast the baskets of grass into the sea. The ritual highlights Bahrain’s unique heritage and teaches children to sacrifice something to which they have become attached to.
