My favourite librarian at school and I have a sacred tradition that we have kept up for nearly six years. Each time we meet together, we calculate the number of days till the next holiday. Today marks two days till the winter break Miss Eman!
I can’t speak for everyone, but personally the winter holidays are my ultimate favourite time of the year. Days are shorter so technically I can sleep for longer hours with the excuse that it is still ‘night time’. If the sun isn’t awake then I don’t see why I need to be.
Big advertisements of seasonal hot chocolate in the windows of cafes, Christmas decorations donning the ceilings of shops and the pending moment where we can officially say ‘New Year, new me’ for the fourth year in a row, is just a fraction of the little tidbits that make this holiday so special.
Actually this holiday season is a little more special than the ones that we have had in the past couple of years because this month is our last month of the DECADE. Wow, I lived through my first full decade - I need a moment to process this.
The New Year is a holiday which entangles the bitter sweetness of wanting to start fresh with a strong sense of déjà vu. For the people who promised to exercise more, eat healthier, or sleep less on last year’s New Year’s Day, did you? Although a happy occasion, New Year’s Day can also be a reminder of the empty promises and disappointing turns that your life took in the past 365 days.
However, a note to all the people who are elated for keeping up with their resolutions this past year, Friends is leaving Netflix on the first of January. Now your day sucks just as much as your failures, ha ha ha.
