One of the island’s leading photographers has been shortlisted for the biggest space photography competition in the world for a picture taken from Zallaq beach, writes Naman Arora.
Premjith Narayanan, an internationally recognised photographer whose work has been featured in publications such as the BBC magazine and National Geographic, is one of the finalists for the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2020, an annual astronomy photography competition organised by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, UK.
Premjith told GulfWeekly: “My photo, The Transit of Mercury, was taken in the evening on November 11 from the sailing club at Zallaq beach and was selected for this competition. This is the first year that I submitted a photo to the competition.”
The transit of Mercury is a rare predictable astronomical phenomena that only occurs 13 to 14 times in a century. A transit is when a smaller celestial body passes directly between a large body, the sun in this case, and the observer, the Earth. The next transit of Mercury will be in 2032.
The competition, launched in 2009, received a record number of entries this year from 70 countries for recognition in one of more than 10 categories. The overall winner of the competition will receive £10,000 (BD4,953).
