The 12th Spectra Art Carnival will see 240 students from across the kingdom compete for the top prize and the opportunity to have their artwork featured in the Indian Community Relief Fund’s (ICRF) 2021 calendar, while raising funds for a worthy cause.

The annual Faber Castell Spectra Festival, organised by the ICRF and held under the patronage of the Indian embassy to Bahrain, has historically attracted 1,500-5,000 young artists from schools across the island.

However, this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, participation has been limited to 240 young students across four groups, who will be competing via Zoom on Friday. Another 100 adults will also be competing in a separate category.

“As usual participants will be divided into four age groups – five to eight, eight to 11, 11 to 14 and 14 to 18,” said co-ordinator Rosalina Roy.

Participation will be allowed only through schools and institutions.

“All participants will be provided with drawing paper and materials, including a pencil, an eraser, a set of colouring pencils and a set of wax crayons or fibre-tip colouring pens.”

Seventeen schools have confirmed their participation including New Horizon School, Bahrain Indian School, Sneha and Philippine School.

The top three winners in each category will receive individual trophies and certificates.

The winning entries and other outstanding creations by the children will be featured in the wall and desktop calendars created by the ICRF for 2021.

The calendars will be launched on January 2 and proceeds from the event will go towards supporting less fortunate families, as part of the ICRF’s Family Welfare Fund.

The fund provides relief to support the families of deceased Indian labourers drawing wages below BD100 per month.

“The Family Welfare Fund provides financial assistance to the dependents of a deceased Indian and has been a great support and help to many unfortunate families, who lost their bread-winner,” ICRF said, in a statement.

“It has supported hundreds of families. This could be one of the greatest satisfactions that every ICRF member holds close to their heart. Though, we pray that none shall be victims of any unfortunate tragedy or loss of life however, we ensure that the family of the unfortunate souls shall be extended a hand of support to face the unexpected adversity.”
