Pre-colonisation Africa’s portrayal as a primitive land is challenged in an upcoming Netflix docuseries narrated and executive produced by Jada Pinkett Smith.
African Queens: Njinga largely questions the ignorant and racist rewriting of history through a deeper look at the story of Queen Njinga – a fierce warrior who assumed control of Ndongo (modern-day Angola) after her father was killed.
The series includes interviews with historians as well as re-enactments, adding context and colour to the life of the 17th century ruler who is remembered for her military tactics, intelligence and diplomatic wisdom.
African Queens: Njinga is available on Netflix, starting today.
