The knives are out in this mystery, thriller book involving a reality-cooking contest, botched recipes, a celebrated baker and a dead body, leaving everyone wondering whodunit.

Writers and authors are in awe of The Golden Spoon, a novel by Jessa Maxwell that has all the ingredients for a wickedly good read, which is why writer and Emmy Award-winning journalist Jamie Orisini found it ‘practically impossible to put down’.

The story revolves around celebraty baker Betsy Martin who hosts a popular show called Bake Week from the grounds of Grafton, her Vermont family estate. She has been whisking in viewers with her show for a decade but change is afoot. The network has foisted a new co-host on her and she had less input than ever before when selecting which six contestants would compete for the show’s coveted Golden Spoon award.

Nonetheless, Betsy chooses to push ahead with the new season, not knowing that things were going to heat up something fierce as soon as the competition commenced.

Contestants believe someone is sabotaging their bakes, and not long after, a dead body is discovered, making everyone in the baking tent a murder suspect.

In the end, just as Jamie shared in his review of this novel, ‘mystery genre fans may find many of the twists easy to spot, but Maxwell’s expert characterisation and lyrical prose make The Golden Spoon a delight to devour’.
