BEYONCE’S much-anticipated film, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, took the box office by storm last weekend, ranking first as it reached a global debut of $27.4 million.

The excellent result came in at what is a normally slow period after the US Thanksgiving holiday.

According to the film’s distributors, AMC Theatres, this is the first time in more than 20 years that a film has opened with more than $20m on the weekend following Thanksgiving.

The American singer and songwriter wrote, directed and produced the film. It takes fans through the behind the scenes of the 56 shows in Europe and North America between May and October for Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour.

It also highlights the preparation and execution that went into the six month long tour, and offers a rare perspective into the iconic singer’s personal life.

The three-hour film lets her fans in to aspects of her private life and a new level of vulnerability that hasn’t been seen before in other projects.

“This is an excellent domestic opening for a concert film,” said David Gross who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

David even made comparisons to Taylor Swift’s concert film, The Eras Tour, but added that “these are very different artists and audiences.”

The Renaissance documentary is now one of the most successful concert films in history, as it ranks among the top five all-time concert movie openings.
