The first episode of the American crime drama mystery Dexter: Original Sin is available for streaming on Paramount+, with episode two set to release tomorrow.
The 10-episode series, which serves as a prequel to the show Dexter, runs until February 14, and tackles serial killer Dexter Morgan’s angsty younger years, played by actor Patrick Gibson.
The show starts showcasing Dexter’s life in 1991 Miami with his sister Debra (Molly Brown) and adoptive father and homicide detective Harry (Christian Slater,) which at first seems like typical domestic bliss, but eventually takes a murderous turn.
Prior to Original Sin, a sequel miniseries titled Dexter: New Blood was released in November 2021, with original Dexter actor Michael C Hall reprising the role, and ran until January 2022, ending on a mysterious note regarding the character’s fate.
Episode one of Original Sin opens by unfolding the cliffhanger, giving viewers the long-awaited answer to their questions, however, showrunner Clyde Phillips emphasised in an interview that the new prequel is not a sequel to the miniseries.
“When we started Dexter, he was fully formed, our Dexter here, instead of being in the relatively protected atmosphere of medical school, he’s now out in the real world and has to learn how to navigate that,” Clyde added.
“He has to learn how to date, how to not get in fights, and also evolve his killing method and body disposal method.”
The original series ran from 2006 to 2013, and earned an overall positive response and 24 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series four times in a row, from 2008 to 2011.
