Walt Disney Pictures musical drama film Mufasa: The Lion King is out now in theatres.
The photo-realistically animated film serves as a prequel and sequel to the 2019 namesake remake of the 1994 film The Lion King, and follows the origin story of orphan Mufasa (Aaron Pierre), who befriends the young prince Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and gets adopted by his family, resulting in the two becoming as close as brothers.
The story is narrated by Rafiki the mandrill (John Kani) to Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter), the granddaughter of Mufasa and daughter of Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé Knowles-Carter).
The movie has been directed by Barry Jenkins from a screenplay written by Jeff Nathanson.
American singer and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for his work on Broadway musicals, was announced as the songwriter for the film’s music, joined by composer Dave Metzger.
The movie also serves as Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy’s feature film debut, who expressed in an interview how proud she is of the talented 12-year-old.
“It’s just a really amazing experience, and I feel like everybody that’s a part of this is so helpful and supportive,” Blue Ivy said, reflecting on the new experience.
The 2019 remake received mixed reviews, with some critics believing the realistic animation resulted in lack of aesthetic, facial expressions and body movement compared to the original version.
