The harvest festival of the south Indian state of Kerala and the visit of its folkloric King Mahabali is being marked by an on-going four-day celebration at the Indian Club. It features a traditional flower display contest ‘pookkala malsaram’ with prize money of $1,000 (BD377) on offer, a tug-of-war challenge and today will see the traditional dance contest Thiruvathirakali with another $1,000 on offer, as well as Onam games for the whole family. Tomorrow there will be a ‘ultsava parambu’ – a traditional Kerala village market with stalls of food, games and accessories. Well-known south Indian folk singer Pranavam Sasi and his team are being flown in for the occasion. The celebrations culminate on Friday in the Onasadhya (Onam feast) featuring a lunch served on a plantain leaf in traditional style with Kerala delicacies prepared and cooked at live stations by chefs flown-in from India.
