The suicide rate amongst expatriate workers here seems to be rising at an alarming rate and although I would never dream of condoning it, I can sort of understand why some feel they have no other option left to them.
For many who come here with dreams of making enough money to support their families back home, the cost of getting here alone is enough to put them into uncontrollable dept for years.
I am however left totally perplexed as to why a man who earns more than the average worker, has no debts, or anyone back home counting on him and family right here in Bahrain who are totally unaware of any reason why he would want to kill himself, would slit his throat in a suicide bid.
It’s true that none of us can really be sure of the demons that lurk inside the people we care about and who knows what goes on behind closed doors but to try to kill himself just because he was “fed up with life” just doesn’t cut it. There has to be something much deeper involved.
Everyone has at some low point in life had the thought of ending it all pass through his or her mind. It’s a natural process of life but for most it is just a fleeting thought that is shoved unceremoniously aside as soon as the realisation that jumping off a tall building or slitting your wrists might hurt. For this man that was not the case.
He slit his own throat so deeply that his trachea was completely exposed. That is not the action someone who is looking for attention, it is the action of someone desperate to die. It’s sad and heart wrenching but in such a case does anyone have the right to go against his wish and save his life whether his reasons are understood or not?
