A woman’s ability to choose a Caesarean is her God-given right and although I would never consider myself to be a die-hard proponent of the procedure, I have serious problems with the holier-than-thou brigade claiming that it is a woman’s duty to put herself through the pain of a natural childbirth if at all possible.
Having a child is a blessing and raising a family a rewarding experience but despite the whole “you’re blossoming, you look radiant... you must feel so fulfilled” thing, pregnancy for a lot of woman can be nine month of living hell. Swollen feet, backache, sleeplessness, sickness and uncontrollable mood swings. Follow that up with a few more months or sleepless night after the baby is born and an adjustment period than could try the patience of a saint, why should a woman not choose to take control of the one thing she can in pregnancy? A woman choosing a C-section doesn’t have to go through hours of tedious and unbelievably painful labour, she can decide — within a certain time frame of course — the most convenient (for want of a better word) time to give birth and more importantly, there is a decrease in the risk of unexpected stillbirths and other complications relating to labour. All medical procedures hold their own risks but like it or not, the choice is an individual one and none of us have the right to judge a woman’s decision on what is best for her and her child.
