Our home is the largest single investment of our lives. It is where the bulk of our hard-earned savings go and it gives us a sense of pride.
We are at home most of the time when we are not busy at work - our families eat, rest and dream there.
While setting up a home, we spend hours planning on what goes into our homes given our individual tastes. In other words, it is perhaps the only one thing which we can truly call our own.
Unfortunately, not many of us bother to care about protecting what is truly ours - we tend to believe that disasters never happen to us, especially inside our homes. We have even coined the phrase "as safe as houses".
However, this is nowhere close to the truth: kitchen fires, break-ins, electrical short-circuits, burst pipes and other calamities happen to us at home.
The irony, says a spokesman for Al Dar home insurance of Bahrain, is that most people do not bat an eyelid when insuring a car worth BD8,000 or less for BD200 a year, but cringe at the thought of spending much less than half that amount to insure their home for BD80,000.
