YOUNG golfers in Bahrain will benefit to the tune of more than BD1,500 thanks to the generosity of GulfWeekly readers.

That was the marvellous sum raised by our 'Play with a Star' auction after we invited readers to bid for the chance to play with a celebrity for the Riffa Views Trophy tournament.

The new 18-hole championship-standard golf course at the Royal Golf Club, Riffa Views, has been designed by Scottish golfing legend Colin Montgomerie, who will be in Bahrain to perform the official opening ceremony of the course tomorrow.

To celebrate the occasion, Riffa Views has organised a three-day series of star-studded events which will include an invitational tournament on Friday on the Royal Golf Club's new nine-hole Academy course, also designed by Monty.

David Wales will be playing with the star after bidding BD500 for the honour.

Mr Wales and the other successful GulfWeekly bidders will watch a golf demonstration, a golf trick-shot show; enjoy lunch at the new Royal Golf Club Academy and play in the nine-hole Riffa Views Trophy event playing with their chosen celebrities.

A spokesman for the Royal Golf Club said: "The money raised from the auction will be used to provide scholarships giving playing privileges at the Royal Golf Club to youngsters showing promise in the sport. It will also be used to help fund trips abroad for young golfers taking part in international tournaments."
