Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has completed a $66 million project to make its power plants more environment friendly.
The company has retrofitted its gas turbines with new low Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) burners to cut emissions to less than the required international standards, said Alba power general manager Mahmood Asghar.
"The project, implemented by a German company, is one of the largest of its kind in Asia and the Middle East," he said.
"The plan was implemented in many phases over the past few months, by Alba's engineers and, with the co-operation of Alstom," he added.
Meanwhile, Alba has won accolades for its safety record as well as its nationalisation efforts.
It won the Outstanding Organisation Award from Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi at the ministry's 24th annual ceremony to honour outstanding employees.
The prize, under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, was received by Alba chief executive Ahmed Saleh Al Noaimi.
