A LEADING US sports professor will be coming to the island next week to help inspire Bahrainis on managing and developing activities in the kingdom.

United States Sports Academy National Faculty member, Dr Rick LaRue, will be in Bahrain from May 10-14 to teach a course in 'Sports Facilities and Event Management', in conjunction with Bahrain's General Organisation of Youth and Sports (Goys).

The course is the second in a six-part series to be hosted by the Goys for the academy's international certification in sports management (ICSM) programme.

For nearly four decades, the academy has provided programmes in sport education to students throughout the nation and to 60 countries across the globe.

It has a long-standing relationship with Goys, which plays a vital role in the development of sports in Bahrain.

Dr LaRue has taught for 23 years at four different universities and is currently a tenured professor and Chair of the Department of Exercise and Sport Performance at the US University of New England.

He is also a Fellow in the North American Society for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance and is the President-Elect of the American Association of Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR).

Dr LaRue is one of the first 100 people to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and is currently writing a book regarding his hiking experiences.

The United States Sports Academy, known world-wide as America's 'Sports University', is an independent, non-profit, accredited, special mission sports university created to serve the nation and the world with programmes in instruction, research and service.

The role of the academy is to prepare men and women for careers in the profession of sports.
