MODEL mums stepped out on the catwalk to celebrate Mother's Day with a Mamma Mia! Abba- inspired fashion show.

The American Women's Association event took place at the Riffa Ballroom of the Intercontinental Regency Bahrain.

Full-time mums, grandmothers and professional career women volunteered to put their best foot forward to the sounds of the legendary 70s' group whose music has been transformed into a worldwide hit stage musical, movie and record-breaking DVD.

As a tribute to mothers, some of the model mums were joined on the ramp by their children.

Defying the notion that perfect looks are the monopoly of the tall and skinny legged, the fabulously outfitted women looked amazing in summer casuals and evening wear by top designer labels including Armani, St John and Ralph Lauren Black Label.

Choreographer Iman Fouad said her aim was to portray natural looking women on stage. She said: "All the 12 women are of different sizes and ages and none of them are professional models. Many were doing the cat walk for the first time.

"All of those involved dedicated a lot of time on rehearsals and have been working on their posture, walk and confidence for the last couple of weeks."

The dresses were sponsored by Bahrain City Centre's luxury department store, Saks Fifth Avenue and make up was supported by Lancome Paris.

Comfort, fit and the personality of the wearer were taken into consideration when choosing the dresses. Western outfits came in colours of summer - peach, orange, whites, silver, yellow, browns and pink. Stylishly-cut jackets were co-ordinated with tailored trousers and smart casuals came in blues, blacks and lavenders.

The show stoppers were the evening gowns in black, red, a shimmering number in a shade of gold and silver and another in a beautiful shade of indigo blue. Very aptly this was choreographed to the Abba classic 'Super trouper'.

A third time participant, Anne Al Zayani, public relations officer at American Mission Hospital, felt that it was a great way to celebrate Mother's Day, although nations in other parts of the world celebrate it at a different time of year.

She said: "I think it's a neat way to dress up and show off your feminine side in expensive clothes. The experience is really exciting."

The fashion show, organised by Iman Fouad and Niveen Bitar, was supported by World Beat Fitness Centre, Michel Hair and Beauty Salon and Suha Travel & Tours.
