GREEN was most definitely the colour for an art competition with the theme 'Your Planet Needs You' to mark World Environment Day.
More than 200 youngsters from primary schools across the kingdom entered the contest organised by Recycling for Charity, which provides special containers to communities and organisations where recyclable resources can be deposited for processing and sale onto world markets with part of the proceeds going to charity.
The children were asked to produce a picture to show their thoughts on the environment and issues such as how what we do affects the world around us.
And today GulfWeekly can exclusively announce the winner as young Alsayed Alsayed Majed from Umm Al Hassam Primary Boys' School, who not only produced a bright, visual picture but also used recycled materials to make his point.
The competition was judged by British Ambassador Jamie Bowden, Warren Jones, of Recycling for Charity, and Ivor Prestwood, general manager of the Crowne Plaza Bahrain, which has just launched its own environmental campaign and will be displaying a selection of the entries in its foyer from today until Saturday.
Mr Prestwood said: "There's been some really good use of colour and it's great to see that the children, even at this age, are really thinking about how we can help save our planet.
"There were lots of entries featuring recycling bins and my own personal favourite showed two globes, one with a sad face, choking on smoke fumes and the other all green and blue with a happy face."
Mr Jones added: "The entries were extremely colourful and it's clear a lot of thought went into them."
And Mr Bowden agreed, saying: "They're really all very good, it's difficult to choose between them and clearly the environmental message is getting across to the children."
As well as a gift voucher for BD50, young Al Sayed Majed will also receive BD500 for his school, which will be presented in a special ceremony at the Crown Plaza this afternoon.
Second place went to Zainab Mohamed Ali Hamidan, of Al Raja School, who will receive a BD30 gift voucher and in third place was Fatima Ahmed Saad of Rabaa Adawiya Primary School for Girls who wins a BD20 gift voucher.
All the prizes have been donated by the British Embassy as part of its own environmental efforts.
Don't miss next week's GulfWeekly for coverage of the prize-giving ceremony.
