Although thousands of families have already savoured the splash-tastic surroundings a more formal event was staged last week to welcome the latest water park to the kingdom's shores.

A ribbon was cut by Shaikh Sultan bin Hamad Al Khalifa and Shaikha Reema bint Hamad Al Kahalifa, son and daughter of His Majesty King Hamad, in the presence of officials from the facility's owners, Majid Al Futtaim Leisure.

More than 200 guests were invited to join in the celebrations which featured a variety of acts including aerial acrobatics, fire jugglers, virtual fireworks alongside a band and singer.

Craig Hart, vice president of Majid Al Futtaim Leisure, said: "We are extremely excited about the official launch of Wahooo! The waterpark has set new standards for leisure in Bahrain and we wanted to do something that was in keeping with the Wahooo! high thrill factor."

During the grand launch event the spotlight fell on a team of 'flow-riders' from South Africa. The world championship squad featuring Wesley Fischer, Billy Tennant, Marta Jekot and Matt Lammers performed surfing tricks on one of the water park's state-of-the-art attractions.

The team also stayed on for an extra couple of days to help train the park's staff on the art of flow-riding.

Billy, 24, said: "We showed them a handful of tricks and they have been faring quite well. With more practice, they will be fine."

The next step will be lessons on how to ride the waves. The park has announced plans to hold flow-riding classes for customers.

The $65 million Wahooo! opened its doors for the first time two months ago with a soft opening for the public to experience the slides, rides and attractions.

General manager Damien Latham said: "The support has been phenomenal and we are thankful to the community for giving us such a warm welcome.

"We are expecting even more demand now that it is officially open. Wahooo! is ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors."

The 15,000 sq/m attraction is temperature-controlled to 30 degrees all year round.
