The region's best drivers put on a thrilling performance at the first 'Speed Weekend' at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.

The venue staged three leading motor racing series - the Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Championship, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East and the Batelco 2000cc Challenge.

Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, the BIC's chief operating officer, said: "I am very happy with what we have been able to create. Speed Weekend, as a concept, is really important to the BIC, and I would hope for the region too, because this is our first home-grown championship.

"All of our racers are from the Gulf and we want to showcase these talented individuals. It's really important that we support these drivers because they are the sport's long-term investment."

Bahrain's young race ace Raed Raffii of the Meezer Group, who was featured on GulfWeekly's back page last week, stormed to victory in the Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Championship SCO9 class final race on Saturday.

Raffii was a force to reckon with as he pulled out from fourth place on the grid, taking first spot on the first turn. He then cruised on to build a 10-second gap on his rivals. He completed the race in 24mins 01.151secs to lead an all-Bahraini podium.

Raffii said: "I am very happy with the win as it was a big moment for me. I had a rough start at the beginning of the weekend as I faced technical problems with my car's braking system.

"On day one, I started second and despite my car problems I managed to maintain the third spot at the end of the race. However, it was the second day that really made a difference. I have to say that 'race two' was one of the best starts in my career.

"I zoomed right by after taking the lead on my first turn around the circuit. I could not believe it when I held until the cheqered flag. Now I am preparing for the coming round that will take place in Riyadh on January 5 and 6. I need to prepare myself physically and mentally before Round Three to secure a good position again."

Fahad Al Musalam, who started from pole and who won race one, was the runner-up just 9.835secs behind Raffii. Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who also won the Batelco 2000cc Challenge, came third 12.248secs behind.

In the SC06 class, Raed's cousin Faisal Raffii finished in 49.738secs claiming his third straight victory in this category. Bandar Al Silmy came second and Hussam Al Saleh was third.

Al Silmy and Al Saleh both benefited from a penalty handed to Tony Whitaker, who had originally finished second but was eventually disqualified.

In the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, Prince Khalid Al Faisal of Saudi Arabia won race two. He finished ahead of his cousin and race one winner Prince Abdul Aziz Al Faisal.

Both Saudi princes were just 0.945secs from each other at the finish. Their fellow-countryman Fahad Al Gosaibi, who is the youngest driver in the Porsche series worldwide, was third 2.819secs behind.

Bahrain's Shaikh Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa was unfortunate as despite taking the lead early on he spun out after losing grip allowing his three rivals to storm through and eventually step onto the podium. However, Shaikh Salman still managed to take fourth place with a 14.787secs gap.

Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa was on the winning end of the tightly contested race two in the Batelco 2000cc Challenge. He secured the title in a Honda Civic in 13mins 29.033secs. He was 0.989secs faster than his older brother Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa in a Honda CRX, who had won the first race on Friday.

Defending champion Mustafa Al Khan was third 1.774secs behind. In fourth place was Shaikh Jaber bin Ali Al Khalifa in a Honda Integra. He completed the race 2.689secs behind Shaikh Hamad bin Isa.

Mohammed Saleh in a Honda Civic came fifth, Hesham Al Othman in a Honda CRX sixth, Tim Birkin in a Honda Integra seventh and Abdulrahman Ghuloom in a Honda Civic eighth.
