THOUSANDS of messages and signatures on a GulfWeekly P1 petition in support of Rebecca Jones were hand-delivered to Downing Street by Editor Stan Szecowka.

The package was accepted by Richard Walker, a MENA officer of the Cabinet Office, for the urgent attention of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his top team.

Rebecca, 43, is fighting a custody battle with her late ex-husband's family who she says tricked her into signing legal papers in Arabic and refused to return her 10-year-old son Adam after a visit.

GulfWeekly has appealed to Mr Brown urging him to use all his influence to help bring Adam back to Bahrain where he belongs.

The Cabinet Office sits at the very centre of government and, together with the Treasury, provides the 'head office' of government in the UK.

The campaign received a further boost with Sheffield MP, Clive Betts, making contact with Qatari officials on behalf of his former constituent.

Rebecca has stayed in Qatar for more than two months to try and win her child back after a court granted custody to his ailing 77-year-old grandmother.

She has launched an appeal against the ruling and the case will be heard on January 31. Rebecca, a British expat, said: "I hope we get a fair hearing and can show the court that I am a good mother and that Adam has a happy home in Bahrain."
