Laughter proves to be the best medicine for troubled times

Review: The Laughter Factory - Dilmun Club, Saar.

DURING these troubled times, laughter in Bahrain has been in short supply but on Saturday evening three cracking entertainers ignored travel warnings and flew in from the United Kingdom to deliver an evening of comic capers.

Smiling Joe Rowntree, deadpan Jo Caulfield and happy plucker Andy Askins ensured that the Dilmun Club's Candles Restaurant was filled with giggles, titters and full-on guffaws.

After a break of around 18 months, the capacity audience welcomed the return of The Laugher Factory with a trio of hot talent making its debut in the kingdom enroute to dates in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

Londoner Joe has one of those faces made for comedy with an instant smile and a wonderful wit and was even able to give a new twist to that stand-up favourite of sitting next to a complete nutter on the bus.

Best-known for her legendary one-woman shows, Jo was next to take to the stage and it's little wonder that she is one of the most popular British comedians on the circuit.

No-one escaped her scorn, husbands were an easy target ... and even those proposing to tie the knot such as Prince William, the British royal who is all set to marry his sweetheart Kate Middleton in April, received a ribbing from her taunting tongue.

She was a tough act to follow but guitar-strumming Andy Askins' wickedly dry sense of humour was as good as it gets. He couldn't believe the warm welcome he had received in Bahrain ... all that waving of flags, bleeping of horns ... Great night. Hilarious.
