Awali Golf Club’s last 18-hole competition of 2013 was held last Friday, with players enjoying glorious conditions – and some also displaying glorious waistlines from the holiday excesses.
The competition, sponsored by Bapco, saw Hamad Fares Al Qutami come home in front carding 40 Stableford points. With both the captain and vice-captain out of Bahrain at the moment, prizes were presented by the tournament director, Abdul Elah Fakhroo. Chasing the leader, Susan Scott’s 39 points gave her runner-up place, with Abdulla Al Haji third (39), Ebrahim Al Hashel fourth (38), and Ali Musbah fifth (38).
Joining the competition as a visitor was Moira Davis, in Bahrain for a few weeks to check-up on the antics of her husband, Brian. Clearly happy to be here, Moira excelled herself and despite using a hotchpotch of borrowed clubs scored a noteworthy 42 points on her away-handicap of 30.
It was also an exciting end to the year for new golfer Ariette Paul, who was handed her first official CONGU (Council Of National Golf Unions) handicap. Ariette will start the 2014 competitions with a generous 35-shot allowance.
