Gulf Weekly Island Classic set for tee-off

EXCITEMENT is growing over the much-awaited 17th annual American Mission Hospital (AMH) Island Classic Charity Golf Tournament.

The Royal Golf Club (RGC) and AMH announced this week that the annual event, which is the main fundraiser of the hospital and is held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, will be played on November 20-22 on His Majesty’s private golf course.

RGC is a Gold Sponsor of the event, providing in-kind donations such as event organisation, golf carts and members of staff to help support and facilitate the running of the tournament over three days.

Bernie Morgan, RGC’s director of golf, said: “We are proud to support the American Mission Hospital by becoming a Gold Sponsor and take great privilege to announce the dates of the tournament. The hospital, with its long-term commitment to providing quality healthcare to the community of Bahrain is a worthy cause to support.”

AMH senior manager fundraising, community & marketing and Island Classic organiser, Bahnaz Abbas, said the hospital team was ‘extremely grateful’ to His Majesty for once again allowing the use of his private golf course for the event.

Funds raised are used towards supporting the work of specific clinical service areas, community outreach and new equipment for the hospital.

The organisers were further boosted this week when Yousif Ali Mirza, chief executive of CrediMax, presented a cheque for BD10,000 to AMH’s chief executive officer Dr George Cheriyan, to sign up as platinum sponsor of the tournament.

Mr Mirza said: “We are proud to be sponsors to help purchase equipment which will enable AMH to offer the latest technology to its patients. It is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility to ensure the health and wellbeing of our staff and through this, the people of Bahrain. We are very grateful for AMH’s continuing service and commitment to providing quality, affordable healthcare to the people of Bahrain.”

Dr Cheriyan was delighted and said: “The AMH Island Classic charity golf tournament is an exclusive event and is the major fundraiser of the hospital.

“Since its inception in 1996, it has become a much-awaited and coveted event in the sporting calendar of Bahrain.”

Funds raised in the first five years of the tournament were used for the construction of the AMH 2000 building which connects the original hospital buildings via a bridge over one of the busiest roads in Manama.

The CrediMax donation will be used to purchase an Ultrasound Unit for the hospital’s Ob/Gyn Unit. Ms Abbas explained: “As every woman knows, finding the right Ob/Gyn service is one of the most important decisions of her life. Our experienced team offers the best medical care in a sensitive, caring environment but due to the upgrade of medical technology, thanks to the support of our sponsors, we are able to go one step further and provide our patients with an unparalleled service.”
