Play your game

In the perfect world every drive you hit would land in the fairway and every approach shot would finish on the green. Unfortunately, this is not a game of perfection and the way you strike the ball can be very different from day to day.

The greatest players accept that they will have days where the swing feels good and some not so good, but are still able to score through good course management and a tidy short game.

I noticed one of my students was hitting the ball further to the right than he intended on several of the early holes. He commented that he normally hit the ball straighter, but on that day something was not quite right. I explained that the golf course was not the place to try and ‘fix’ your swing and it was better to accommodate his shot for the day.

On the next tee we placed the ball towards the right side of the markers and I told him simply to aim to the left side of the fairway. If he hit it straight it would be on the left of the fairway, but consistent with his swing on the day he pushed the ball further right than intended yet was happy to see the ball end in the middle!

For the rest of the round we scored ok and hit the practice range afterwards to straighten out those drives.
