Attempting to keep their nerves in check, 17 bright-eyed golfers ventured to Awali Golf Club on Saturday for the first non-handicappers competition of the 2014/15 season.

Demonstrating a range of ability from novice to clearly having played before, everyone was seen back at the clubhouse, after 9 holes of play, in jubilant mood.
In the air-conditioned comfort of the clubhouse, the results were calculated using the ‘modified Callaway scoring system’ which purportedly creates a more level playing field amongst players of varying ability.

Following the machinations of the calculator, club president Alan Goulden awarded the prizes.

Newcomer Jeff Houdek surfaced as the overall winner on 38, Tim Beynon was runner-up on 38¼ and Clive Turpin, Mel Fakhroo and Yvonne Addison shared third place with 38½.

The club’s professional, Matt Chalmers, was on hand to offer words of encouragement and also a free lesson to one player, who achieved the accolade of ‘most golf played’.

The players will look forward to the next event on November 22, in which they will have the pleasure of a handicap calculated from this first competition.

As is typical with competitions at Awali Golf Club, photographs of play were a popular side-show on the clubhouse TV, as some players had never seen photos of themselves in golfing action before. One impersonation of a player serving time in the stocks was particularly well received!
