How much bounce?

Modern wedges come in a variety of lofts, so the player has the full option of angles to fit in with the rest of their set. Another important angle that we have on a wedge that is often overlooked or not understood is the bounce angle on the sole of the club head.

The bounce angle relates to the angle on the bottom of the head from the back of the sole to the front. If you look closely at the specialist wedges on offer, this angle can be from two degrees (low bounce) up to 16 degrees (high bounce).

The general rule is, if you play on a course with harder turf and firmer sand, to use a wedge with low bounce. On softer turf and deper sand, use a wedge with more bounce.

Also, if you are a player that takes deep divots you might want to consider a higher bounce, as the club won’t dig in so much at impact. Alternatively a lower bounce angle suits players that have a shallower swing and smaller divots.
