An audition to an upcoming B-Movie: Golfing in Jurassic Park, was held at Awali Golf Club on Saturday, and a field of creaking bones staggered around the course under the more polite banner of the Seniors Championship, a competition open only to those that had entered their sixth decade. This, therefore, meant nearly all the club’s handicapped members were eligible!
Nippy conditions forced the players to keep moving quickly through their 18-hole round and all made it back to the clubhouse. The wrinkled competitors collapsed into their post-golf seats with the expected geriatric groans and winces.
Showing that there was some life left in the participants, the clubhouse was as noisy as ever, helped by the presence of guests still in Bahrain whilst visiting over Christmas.
Director Abdul Elah Fakhroo and assistant director Bill Scarth, after much analysis, decided that Richard Timmis was the most suitable candidate due to his superlative performance of net 64 (gross 86), with the commendable performance of John Parker (67/88) and Tony L Robinson (68/89) also highlighted.
A special acknowledgement was made for those that were participating for the first time, namely Rey Alejandro, Jean Perois, Richard Timmis, Petri Kettunen, Blake Budge, Richard Loker, Jeff Houdek and Alan Staunton.
A possible first for Awali was witnessed too. Captain Fakhroo presented Timmis with his initial Awali handicap certificate bearing 22 calculated from his recent card submissions. He then presented the winner with his spoils and his revised handicap certificate bearing 20, all within the space of a few minutes!
