Mind games

Golf is one of those unique ball sports where one has a lot of time to think about the shot in hand, due to the ball being stationary.

Many players have experienced that horrible feeling of holding so many negative thoughts or over-complicated technical thoughts that they are unable to perform a stroke as they would naturally do in practice.

Try this mental exercise to distract your mind from the pressure of the shot:
* Set up to the shot in your normal fashion, whether it is a long one or a short one.
* Before executing the shot, allow your mind to focus on a tricky task. For example, you can count in your mind back from 50 in groups of three i.e. 50, 47, 44…etc.
* As you count, allow the subconscious to control the stroke.
* By focusing on one thing that tests your brain, you will be able to perform the task without those old negative thoughts creeping back in. Try it on the range and you’ll be surprised at the positive outcome!
