ARSENAL Soccer School U14s won a weekend Charity Football Tournament staged at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club (BRFC) with a narrow 3-2 penalty shootout victory following a scoreless final against the competition’s surprise underdogs, The Globetrotters, who were fielding one the youngest squads with even a 10-year-old in goal.
Eleven sides entered the highly-competitive contest and eight took part in an Under-8 tournament staged earlier in the day which was won by Al Hekma International School who beat the Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain 2-0 in their final.
The footballers were not the only winners as more than BD1,300 was raised in aid of the Home for Disabled Children, a charitable cause chosen by St Christopher’s School pupil Olivia Gardiner, 15.
Each player donated BD2 to play and Olivia’s sister Jessica, 10, and tournament organiser Paul Vrijhof’s daughter, Roma, 12, contributed BD300 towards the total by selling homemade cookies to spectators. A raffle also helped boost the coffers.
“It was a great day of sporting action for a good cause,” said Mr Vrijhof, 41, managing director of Dutch independent tank storage provider Vopak, who has been working alongside BRFC to stage competitive community sport for young people in the kingdom, as reported earlier in GulfWeekly.
