The Arabian Horse Organisation held its second Bahrain Produce Arabian Horse Show last week at the BDF Equestrian Centre, Sakhir.

There were classes for fillies, mares, colts and stallions of varying age groups from yearlings to older horses, with gold, silver and bronze championship prizes to be awarded.

There were more than 90 entries with each horse being marked in detail on type, head, neck, body, top-line, legs and movement.

Winning the Gold Champion Stallion of the Show accolade was Safir Al Shakhoura. Silver went to Ameer Al Shakhoura owned by Al Zain Stud and Rayyan Al Shakhoura took bronze, owned by Abdulla Aif. All three were bred by Al Shakhoura Farm.

It was not surprising that Naif Al Rayyan won the title of best sire, as he sired the gold, silver & bronze champion stallions, the gold champion filly and yearling filly and was grand sire to the gold champion yearling colt.

Another exciting contest coinciding with the Labour Day celebrations was a fantastic Cross Country Event organised by a group of local stables, held in the area behind Abbas Al Ghuraifi’s stable in Saar.

Superbly organised by Fareed Madan and Ali Altabal, the event was a huge success.

Sayed Mohammed Nasser secured an impressive time of 2mins and 31seconds to take the top position and coming close on his hooves and heels in a time of 2mins 36secs was Sayed Mohammed Belad. In third place was Hussain Omri.

All participants were awarded a certificate with trophies going to the leading performers.

This was the second event to be held in Bahrain and organisers are hoping, weather permitting, to stage another one before Ramadan.

Finally, don’t forget to keep ‘KEWL’ this summer. It is imperative now the weather has definitely cranked up a few notches to be keeping both yourself and your animals, especially your horses, cool and happy.

Recently arrived in Bahrain are products by Hyperkewl which uses an evaporative cooling technology involving polymer chemistry. The fabric provides temperatures 15-20 degrees (F) cooler than the ambient temperature.

The products are all encompassing with vests for humans as well as their favourite equines and canines and include rugs, wraps, neckties and dog beds. There are a host of products available.

In my opinion they are very useful for riders. There are cooling neckties and vests, as well as wristbands that can be worn whilst riding. One young rider put one of the jackets to the test last weekend at the cross country event and described it as ‘amazing’, so much so that her older brother ‘borrows’ it to play football!
