Awali Golf Club’s (AGC) competition season got off to a flying start with the traditional Captain’s Charity Drive In.

Members purchased markers for BD1 each which they then placed on the fairway, hoping to predict the final resting place of Club Captain Bill Scarth’s opening drive.

In front of a packed gallery and showing a rare degree of accuracy, Scarth drilled the ball 320 yards down the middle. Afterwards he put his excellent drive down to regular lessons with the club professional, a good dose of adrenaline and a couple of pints of ‘muscle relaxant’ prior to the shot.

David Bailey predicted the drive most accurately and won the prize. Scarth was delighted to announce that BD144 was raised for a children’s charity still to be announced.

Onny Martin, ‘el Presidente’ of the Monday Scuds group, then announced that the ‘Scudders’ had agreed to match the amount raised and presented the captain with an additional BD144 – its generosity helping the club’s charity fundraising to get off to a great start for the season.

The afternoon then continued with the season opening Captain vs President team matchplay event. Always keenly contested, the Captain’s team were clearly buoyed by Scarth’s opening drive and ran away 11 ½ to 3 ½ winners.
