The Westin and Le Meridien hotels in City Centre Bahrain have been recognised for their commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency, as their parent company has become the only conglomerate in the world to earn an acclaimed certification for its entire hospitality portfolio, writes Naman Arora.

Majid Al Futtaim, which also operates Hilton Garden Inn and Sheraton in the Mall of the Emirates, as well as Aloft in City Centre Deira, is the first organisation in the region to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification across all its properties.

It now operates 29 green certified buildings and 2.5 million square metres of space with green credentials.

“We aim to set the standard for sustainability and sustainable business growth in the region – in terms of our assets, our people and our communities,” said Khalifa Bin Braik, managing director of the company’s hotels and properties divisions.

“The LEED Platinum certification is proof positive of our impact on the industry and region. Not only does it vindicate our work so far, it also lays the groundwork for even more innovative thinking, planning and delivery – inspiring leading-edge approaches to hospitality that will help us and our guests to create a cleaner, safer and healthier world.”

LEED is a globally-recognised green building rating system. It appraises the design, structure and operations of a building, if these factors promote efficiency, improve performance and optimise sustainability practices.

Evaluated projects are awarded one of four certifications: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
