Manchester United fans reckon they are a cut above the rest ... particularly a merry band of supporters living in Bahrain.

Not only do they love cheering on the Premiership champions from afar they also have a trendy shrine in the shape of a men's hairdressing salon.

The 'Manchester United Saloon' on the Buidaiya High Road near the turning to Diraz, attracts the Middle East's Red Army by the score.

"We love the team so much that it seemed only natural to name our shop after the world's greatest team," said co-owner Isa Al Shehabi, 27, who plays a high level of soccer on the island too.

He is a former youth team captain and now plays in defence for Al Ahli FC as well as holding down a supervisor's position at Ahli United Bank.

And the February 6 date he opened the barber shop with his brother Loqman last year was particularly significant to all Red Devils' fans.

Isa explained: "I wanted to open this salon on that day in order to commemorate the Munich Disaster of 1958 in which great men were lost."

Some of the world's most talented young players - known as the Busby Babes - died in an air crash which claimed 21 lives. Their average age was 24 and they included Roger Byrne - the captain - Mark Jones, Eddie Colman, Tommy Taylor, Liam Whelan, David Pegg and Geoff Bent.

Isa has been a loyal Red since the early 1990s after purchasing his first 'Man U' team shirt.

He said: "I loved the likes of Eric Cantona, and the young guns of that time; Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Butt and Neville."

Then, after years of cheering the team on the road to glory he decided it was time he put his "Red Heart", as he called it, to the test.

Isa said: "I wanted to do something special for all the Man United fans here in Bahrain. The 'true' fans that get upset when they lose, frustrated when they miss and angry when people don't understand why they act that way about a team that is an ocean away.

"At first I thought of opening a sports store, but then I felt that I would be a traitor to my team selling other team jerseys!

"Instead I opened a gent's salon where I serve customers and fans from all over. If you love Manchester United then this is where you will feel at home."

The salon is constantly buzzing with United fanatics who have no problem finding something to talk about when they await their turn for a cut.

Isa said: "You will definitely get special treatment if you are a Man U fan. In fact, we even have special cuts in honour of the players!"

Syrian stylist Waleed Mohammed Ali, 23, from Budaiya, enjoys it when customers ask him for a special United trim.

Waleed said: "A lot of people want the 'Rio' cut which is in honour of Cristiano Ronaldo. The second favourite is Carrick.

"I have been following the team since I was child. I have a lot of brothers and used to constantly hear them saying Manchester this or that. Even kids on the streets would know about United.

"The love of a team usually starts from a young age and grows with you. Why else would these little kids ask me for hair-cuts like these football super stars?"

Expat Mike Lowe, who is not only a regular at the salon but also a fanatical, slightly balding United fan, said: "I love the atmosphere of the room and always tell 'em that I'll have a short back ... but leave room for a pair of speedy wingers on the sides!

"I don't think they get the joke because their English is not very good ... but it makes me smile!"

Bahrain's hair-raising antics will be music to the ears of Manchester United's moneymen who recently announced record profits. As reported in GulfWeekly the club hopes to expand and develop its overseas support base.

Just two weeks ago United travelled across the Causeway to play an exhibition match in Saudi Arabia against the Al Hilal team, which earned them £1 million and criticism from the Press in the UK.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson hit back saying that four days away from Britain's miserable weather and the chance of regular training and playing was too good an opportunity to miss.

It did not help the team on the park, however, as they were beaten 3-2 in front of 65,000 fans in the King Fahad Stadium in a match set up to celebrate the retirement of one of Saudi's top players.

Ferguson insisted the Saudi trip had first and foremost boosted the club's on-field preparations and on a similar mission a couple of seasons ago they returned refreshed and won the FA Cup.

He said: "The atmosphere the fans created in the stadium in Riyadh was amazing. The noise - for both teams - was deafening and I think all the players put on an entertaining show, fit to mark Sami Al Jaber's retirement.

"We enjoyed ourselves very much in the Middle East - the people were so friendly. Everywhere we went, there were hundreds of enthusiastic fans."

The gents from the Bahrain salon were among United's army of fanatical Arab supporters cheering on Sir Alex's team.

Waleed said: "Off course I went to watch them play in Saudi ... it was my chance as I have never been to England."

Isa is luckier as he has fond memories of a visit to Manchester United's theatre of dreams home - Old Trafford - and watching his stars beat Aston Villa by a single goal.

"I remember Ruud van Nistelrooy scored the winner like it was yesterday," he said.

"I can tell you right now that there isn't one United game I have ever missed on TV.

"Right now I am trying to get a ticket to the Man U v Arsenal game at Old Trafford on April 12.

"It's really difficult but I don't care how I get it - I am going to that game!"

He hopes to fulfil another dream of meeting the manager and shaking his hand.

Perhaps, he can offer him a short full-back and a couple of wingers on the side at the same time!
