A LEADING representative of the R&A (Royal & Ancient) from St Andrew's in Scotland has been in Bahrain and held important talks with the General Organisation for Youth and Sports (Goys) regarding developing the sport of golf within the kingdom.
Duncan Weir, the R&A's director of golf development, was invited to Bahrain by Michael Braidwood, the general manager of the Royal Golf Club at Riffa Views.
The pair met with Goys president Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa and discussed methods for promoting golf in Bahrain, particularly amongst the young.
The R&A is golf's world rules and development body and organiser of the famous annual Open Championship. The profits made from running the Open are invested back into golf development globally and the R&A is especially committed to assisting emerging golf-playing nations such as Bahrain.
"Duncan had a very productive meeting with Shaikh Fawaz and was impressed with the country's ongoing commitment to developing golf," said Braidwood.
"The R&A has pledged assistance in continuing this trend, particularly by means of increasing the number of local and regional golf tournaments and championships held exclusively for youngsters.
"This is an excellent means of encouraging budding young golfers to compete against their compatriots on a regular basis, thus providing the stimulus to progress and improve their game."
