An opportunity to start afresh

A few days back, we went walking along the seafront. And, though Bahrain does not boast grand foamy waves, it was a wonderful experience none the less.

The water gently lapped the pebble-strewn sand as tranquil ripples broke the glittering surface of the sea.

As the glowing sun dipped lower in the sky, the heavens were painted in a glorious fusion of red and gold, while the reflecting water dazzled with shimmering points of light.

And, as we blinked, gazing at the sun slowly disappearing beneath the horizon, there were brilliant flashes of red illuminating the vicinity.

The early January breeze was crisp and fresh as we set off on a tottering jog; the wind whistling in our ears.

It's amazing how a quick walk can refresh you and make you feel lighter and brighter. So, my resolution for 2010 is to be more active.

Inevitably, new years are associated with resolutions that are notorious for being broken the day they're made.

Resolutions, after all, take perseverance and will power that seem to pall in the wake of an easy way out.

New Year resolutions tend to become quite similar after a while; losing weight, quitting smoking or getting better grades.

Yet, most of them are empty proclamations that are soon forgotten till the year comes to an end.

So this year, promise yourself that you will work towards a goal and have it complete by the end of the year.

When 2010 comes to a close, you will then have the amazing feeling of ticking off a job well done. Naturally, resolutions are not reflections of your fantasies. So, deciding to drop down from a size 14 to a size 4 would be a ludicrous and a highly unhealthy notion.

Keep it simple, practical and laudable and most importantly, strive for it.

A New Year after all is an opportunity to start afresh with a clean slate.

Like Oprah Winfrey said: "Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right."
