BayerNever-Leusen snatched the GulfWeekly Expat 8-a-side Premiership title after securing a dramatic late equaliser against a determined Dilmun Club side who came so close to spoiling the party.
The Dilly Boys were 1-0 up with only three minutes of play remaining, knowing an unlikely victory would open the door to title-chasing challengers' Oak FC and Saar Eagles who were set to play against each other in the league's final fixture.
Craig Guire had put away a neat free kick in the first half and the aging legs of the Dilmun Club appeared to be standing firm amid a Bayer onslaught when a shot cannoned off the woodwork and careered off the shins of hapless defender Ian Smalls Ashbury into the net.
The one point was enough for BayerNeverLeusen, who last season snatched the title under the name of Wahooo! although this year's squad included several new, sprightly 25-year-old recruits, the minimum age limit for the contest.
The draw meant Oak FC needed at least a five-goal advantage against arch-rivals Saar Eagles to take the title on goal difference but came unstuck, losing 4-2.
The Eagles, the league's runners-up, would have landed the title themselves with that result had the Dilly held on to victory.
But, confident of taking the trophy at the end of proceedings last Wednesday evening, BayerNeverLeusen unrolled a victory banner and the celebrations began. Captain Tim Gillet said: "The team played well."
An awards ceremony will take place at the Dilmun Club on December 9.
