SOCCER-HUNGRY women are rushing to sign up to compete in the first national league contest after GulfWeekly teamed up with Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain to launch it.
The Arsenal Soccer School Ladies Seven-a-Side League will kick off on Monday, April 18, with matches at the Batelco Sports Ground in Hamala.
The teams will be competing for the coveted GulfWeekly Ladies Trophy and a knockout cup competition will also be staged in the coming weeks.
The league is being organised by Deena Rahman, a former England international and senior coach at Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain. She said: "The response to the league has been fantastic. So far we have five teams confirmed and one more called today wanting to sign up.
"This is a great opportunity for ladies to take part in an organised competitive league and an exciting way to help develop the women's game on the island."
The league will be open to all women over the age of 14 and teams are being urged to sign up as soon as possible. Each squad must consist of a maximum of 10 players.
Sixty players representing schools, universities and sporting clubs on the island are among those to have already registered an interest in taking part.
The rules will allow rolling substitutes and no offside and to register will cost just BD100 a team, the equivalent of BD10 per player in each squad.
At the end of the league a presentation night will be staged at Med CafŽ in Budiaya.
