The Royal Golf Club's PGA teaching professional Tim Backhouse gives tips on gripping the club

THE grip is arguably the most important part of the set up. If the grip is wrong it is impossible to hit the ball straight with a 'perfect' swing.

A 'strong grip' for a right hander is having the hands too far to the right which with a good swing will create a right to left shape.

A 'weak grip' is where the hands are too far to the left, which will create a left to right shape.

The 'neutral grip' has the 'V' shapes created between the thumb and index finger on both hands pointing towards the right shoulder.

A lot of people who come for lessons tell me what they think they are doing in their swing but cannot change it. But very often the fault in their swing is created by a bad grip!

So next time you think about changing your swing, make sure your grip is correct first because all you will be doing by changing your swing when you still have a bad grip is correcting a fault with a fault and that can't be consistent.
